It takes a diverse group of people to provide the many types of disability and youth supports we offer at MADEC. In this series we chat with our staff about their roles and spotlight some of the friendly faces in our team! For our third instalment, we had a chat with our NDIS Service Coordinators, Jaymie, Fiona, Deserá and Ashley.

Our NDIS Service Coordinators are responsible for coordinating the teams of Support Workers that deliver our quality supports day-in-day-out. They’re all about making sure our NDIS participants reach their goals no matter how big or small, and are a pretty amazing bunch of humans (if we do say so ourselves)!

What does an NDIS Service Coordinator do?

Jaymie: As a Service Coordinator, my role is dynamic and fast-paced, with each day bringing new challenges. Working in the High Physical Support and Complex Medical side of MADEC requires me to quickly adapt to changes in participants’ health and well-being. I assess risks and implement safe practices, while also providing education, tools, and training to our high physical support workers who manage crises alongside participants.

Additionally, I spend time supporting our Team Leaders in Supported Independent Living (SIL) operations, collaborating with stakeholders and family members, updating documentation, ensuring audit compliance, and staying current with NDIS Commission requirements for mandatory reporting and incident follow-up. A crucial aspect of my role involves navigating funding allocations, where I play a strategic game of “Tetris” to ensure that resources are aligned with participant needs, always keeping the focus on delivering client-centred outcomes. Writing detailed reports is also essential, as it helps secure the necessary funding through the NDIS to support our participants effectively.

Fiona: As a NDIS Service Coordinator, I support individuals by ensuring their needs and goals are met and provided through person-centred active support. My typical day involves interacting with clients and their stakeholders, organising services, managing the teams that support our participants, and handling day-to-day tasks to keep everything on track.

Deserá: My role as a Service Coordinator is focused on guiding and supporting my teams to ensure the quality delivery of person-centred active supports to our valued participants within their homes and the community.

Ashley: My role at MADEC is NDIS Service Coordinator and it involves coordinating support provision for a number of participants across Supported Independent Living settings, as well as within the community. The role also enables me to work closely with the staff whom support our participants and it’s been excellent to see the level of care and compassion exhibited by MADEC staff within the short time I have been here.

What do you love most about your job?

Jaymie: What I love most about my role is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives while challenging conventional approaches. My experience in various roles within the disability sector ranging from Support Worker to Team Leader has equipped me with the skills to effectively support and lead teams successfully. As a Service Coordinator, I’m able to ensure that participants receive best practice care in line with NDIS standards and choice and control. Ultimately, the most rewarding part of my job is witnessing participants achieve goals they once thought were beyond their reach.

Fiona: What I love most about my role is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives. It’s incredibly rewarding to help participants achieve their goals, gain greater independence, and see the positive difference that the right support can make. Every day brings a new challenge, and being able to advocate for and empower others keeps me motivated and passionate about my work.

Deserá: I love celebrating client achievements, no matter how big or small!

Ashley: I love that the role enables me to empower both participants and staff to do their best. It’s nice to return to a role that allows me to develop a relationship with the participants, as well as, the staff.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Jaymie: I would love to go to Santorini, Greece.

Fiona: Northeast Asia — in particular, Japan.

Deserá: I would love to travel around Europe.

Ashley: My partner and I have always wanted to visit Italy together, largely because of the food. While I’m sure the sight seeing there is exceptional, the food and wine is at the top of my to-do list.
