Participation in the community, and connection with other humans, is vital – for both persons with and without disability. Community engagement services are all about offering supports to persons with a disability that involve participating in the community.
This could include catching public transport, joining a social club, attending a course for education, going to an event, getting out of the house, trying new things, and meeting people.
Engaging in such community participation is crucial for mental and physical health.
Community participation is so much more than just socializing, it’s about sharing spaces, making your goals a reality, making life interesting, connecting with other people, expanding your horizons, and living your best life.

Social and community participation is about meeting people with similar interests and joining in social and community activities. It means going where others go, doing what others do, with other people and choosing activities you enjoy. Social and community participation also means different things to different people. It can include going to your local café, joining a netball team, bushwalking with a friend, doing a craft class, getting work experience, or volunteering.
Community participation is so important because research shows that building connections, community, and communication skills improves overall health and well-being. Partaking in activities that interest you and that you enjoy is good for you.
Have a think about what you enjoy doing for fun. What are your goals? Do you need supports to help you achieve these goals? What activities and supports are available to you where you live? Thinking about these questions will help set you up for successful community participation.
MADEC can offer supports for community participation in a variety of ways. Some of these include helping to locate activities that interest you, connecting you with participation opportunities, providing person-centred active support and listening to your needs, wants, and goals, and attending activity opportunities with you if you desire.
