Kathy Burston has used MADEC’s supports and lived in a Supported Independent Living (SIL) residence since 2020. An avid crocheter and always up for a chat, Kathy says she “did a lot for herself” when she could, but having MADEC supports has improved her quality of life.
“The Support Workers let me do what I want if I want… they help me in every way they can.”
One of Kathy’s favourite supports is assistance with planning meals, ordering groceries, and cooking – something she is no longer comfortable with.
“They help me do my list for the week, my menu, which I love – and they help me switch it around if I want to switch it.”
Heading out and about is also a priority for Kath, with regular shopping trips to Mt Pleasant Shopping Centre. She enjoys being out in the community with MADEC’s Support Workers, who she describes as “great fun.”
When asked if she would recommend MADEC to others, Kath emphasises that she likes her home and the staff.
“The girls are just amazing. Even sitting out on the veranda is great fun, to have smoko sitting out there.”
Her ultimate advice to those looking at Supported Independent Living is to check it out.
“Definitely go to the [MADEC] office and check it out. There are lovely people in the office!”
