With over 50 years of experience as a community services organisation, MADEC is proud to announce the launch of Stronger Together, a comprehensive mental health education initiative designed to equip individuals and communities with vital skills to support those experiencing mental health challenges. Sponsored by the Queensland Mental Health Commission, this program will provide accessible and affordable Mental Health First Aid workshops to the Mackay region.

MADEC CEO Jasmine Lowry underscored the significance of this initiative, saying:
“Mental health affects us all, and by learning how to recognise the signs and have open conversations, we can break down stigma and create safer, more connected communities. ‘Stronger Together’ is about empowering people with the confidence and knowledge to offer meaningful support when it’s needed most.”

Workshops for Every Community Member

The Stronger Together initiative includes a range of evidence-based workshops, each tailored to different aspects of mental health support:

  • Youth Mental Health First Aid – Aimed at adults who work with or care for young people (aged 12-18), providing accreditation valid for three years.
  • Teen Mental Health First Aid – Equips students with peer-to-peer support strategies to assist classmates experiencing mental health issues.
  • Conversations About Suicide – Helps adults learn how to provide initial support to someone experiencing suicidal thoughts.
  • Conversations About Non-Suicidal Self-Injury – Provides training on assisting individuals engaging in self-harm.

Jasmine Lowry further emphasized the accessibility of these sessions, stating:
“We’ve worked hard to ensure that cost is not a barrier, with heavily subsidised sessions made possible through the Commission’s support. Whether you’re a teacher, a parent, a student, or someone who wants to make a difference—these workshops are for you.”

Program Details and How to Get Involved

Workshops will run from February 24 to April 29, with sessions held at MADEC and selected school sites. Prices range from just $25 to $100, making this a highly affordable opportunity for individuals and organisations.
