MADEC Disability Services

Night-time Attendant Care (NAC)

2004 saw the introduction of a new service to the Mackay Disability Sector. MADEC has recently received funding through Disability Services Queensland Innovative Funding for a Night-time Attendant Care Service. The program commenced in May 2004 as a pilot program.

The Night-time Attendant Care Service project is based on a response to the needs of people with a disability in the community collected over twelve months of consultation and planning by the Mobile Attendant Care Service Steering Committee. The Committee has been made up of representatives from Disability Services Queensland (DSQ), Service Provides, Community Organisations and people with a disability. There needs have been identified through surveys, research and consultation that have resulted in the proposed model of the service and is supported by quantitative and qualitative data and findings.

The Night-time Attendant Care Service is a night-time care service targeting people with a disability under the age of 65. The service will run from 8pm till late, seven days a week. The service will enable service users to make bookings for night-time attendant care as well as the ability to respond to call outs during night time hours. Service Users can register by calling MADEC office or through referral from other service providers or community organisations.

The aim of this project is to foster choice and empowerment for people with disability and participate in decision making that directly affects their lives. The model developed for this service will enable clients to attend night time events including movies, meetings, courses and other events and functions that add to the quality of individuals’ lives. It will also enhance the everyday aspect of clients’ lives through providing a “tuck in service” to those clients that require assistance to go to bed after hours of their normal support. The service will provide the opportunity for clients to be integrated into the community and provide respite for their families or carers.

Enhancing the Night-life

The existence of an after hours service enhances the night life of clients by:

  • Delivering a service which meets specific needs of individuals
  • Improving the quality of life to people across the night time period
  • Allow people the choice to attend evening social outings, training, community meetings, appointments, etc
  • Increasing options for people who are socially isolated as a result of available support
  • Having a voice in the provision of the service through involvement in the Steering Committee
